Intermountain Wildland Fire Occurrence – Data Validation Project
Fire occurrence data from the Wildland Fire Management Information (WFMI) system will be fundamental measure of workload that will be used in the Fire Program Analysis (FPA) system. Since FPA will be fully operational in FY09, it is essential that fire occurrence records are accurate and valid for the previous 10-year period. Fire occurrence records from WFMI will be utilized by FPA, along with neighboring agency fire occurrence records, for the purposes of identifying cost effective wildland fire programs and, ultimately, informing budget development. FPA has selected NAD83 as the standard datum for fire record location data.
The purpose of this NPS Internet Mapping Service (IMS) site is to provide a timely and efficient method for fire programs in the Intermountain Region to validate fire locations and fire/protection type codes. Several parks may have already completed the validation process using locally available GIS support. However, Fire Management Officers are encouraged to review and validate the fire records from each park within their designated park group using the IMS site. Detailed information on the process to correct fire locations and/or fire/protection type codes is included in the User Guide.
National Historic Landmarks are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. Today, fewer than 2,500 historic places bear this national distinction. Working with citizens throughout the nation, the National Historic Landmarks Program draws upon the expertise of National Park Service staff who work to nominate new landmarks and provide assistance to existing landmarks.
Intermountain Wilderness Resources
The National Park Service (NPS) Wilderness Program assists individual parks in implementing the requirements of the 1964 Wilderness Act through policy and guidance development, training for managers and staff, technical assistance, and advisory services. Over 50 percent of the National Park System is congressionally designated wilderness with additional acreage in more than 25 parks proposed or recommended for wilderness designation.
